Flowers: From seed to seedlings

File_000(5)

It started for real on February 19 when we got our seeds.  These are but a few. Only the garden gods know what we’ll end up with but here’s what we’re starting with – Zinnias, Cornflower, Cosmos, Nigella Gomphrena, Cleome, and Snapdragon from seed, and Lavender, Echinacea, and Salvia from plugs.

Well that didn’t take long!  February 24 – 5 days in – and the Cornflowers are off to the races.

February 26 and the vines are getting in on the act.  Moonflowers and Morning Glories, (not for the wedding, sorry), are under the lights with the Cornflowers.

Thank goodness that Leni Sorensen was ready to part with her greenhouse by March 11!  With 15 trays of seedlings going we would have had trouble finding room in the house.  Snapdragons are off to a slow start but everything else is looking pretty good.

April 10, and these guys are busting out of their trays.  Cornflowers and Cosmos are probably 6 inches, and Marigolds (forgot to mention them earlier) are starting to bud.  Better get these guys in the ground soon!

No photo, but 2 trays of Lavender, 2 trays of Echinacea, and a tray of Salvia are already in the ground.

April 17 – Cornflowers are a jungle, but weren’t in the greenhouse long after this one was taken.  After a long weekend there are only 5 trays left – Snapdragons and Nigella.  We’ll give then another week or two then they can join their buddies outside in the garden.
